Pippies K'gari Adventures · Rainbow Beach

Three days and a private camp on K'gari

Pippies runs a tag-along convoy out of its Rainbow Beach hostel: you drive, a guide leads, and you camp two nights at a private site near Cathedrals. Pick it for the long stops, two hours each at Champagne Pools and Eli Creek, and a sunset on the Corrigin Sandblow.

Pippies 3-Day K'gari Adventure

About this experience

Pippies is a backpacker hostel in Rainbow Beach that runs its own K'gari trips. Its 3-day trip is a tag-along: guests drive the 4WDs in a convoy behind the guide. Check in at reception before 4 pm the day before, because the convoy leaves at 7 am sharp for the barge at Inskip Point. Departures run Monday to Saturday.

The stop times are generous. Day one: 90 minutes at Lake McKenzie, two hours at Central Station and Wanggoolba Creek with lunch, then the private campsite near Cathedrals and a sunset walk on the Corrigin Sandblow, which Pippies says only its groups can access. Day two: two hours at Champagne Pools, two hours at Eli Creek, an hour at the Maheno and the Pinnacles. Day three: three hours over the Hammerstone Sandblow to Lake Wabby.

Meals are simple (toast and cereal for breakfast, guests say), and the crowd is young and social. The listing says moderate fitness. Only three of its 365 reviews show on Viator; the rest sit on Tripadvisor. Direct, Pippies charges AUD 619 for the tour, or AUD 699 with two nights in the hostel dorm.

We absolutely LOVED these 3 days on Fraser Island. [...] the tour is very well organised, the jeeps are so much fun and the food/accomodation were above our expectations.

You see the best bits the island has to offer. 3 days is just right but going with the right company is crucial. Pippies has the experience.

Tips before you book

  • Check in by 4 pm the day before. The convoy won't wait at 7 am.
  • Take the AUD 699 package if you need a bed in Rainbow Beach anyway; it covers two dorm nights.
  • Swim at Champagne Pools only at mid-tide and stay clear of breaking waves. QPWS records drownings and spinal injuries there.
  • Never run, roll or board down the Corrigin or Hammerstone dunes. QPWS warns of serious spinal injuries on K'gari's dunes.
