Dingos K'gari Adventures · Rainbow Beach

Drive K'gari yourself, three days

You and six or seven others share a 4WD and take turns at the wheel, following a lead guide along 75 Mile Beach and the inland tracks of K'gari (Fraser Island). It's the cheapest way to drive the island without the rollover risk sitting on your own hire contract, and it's built for 18 to 35-year-olds.

Dingos 3-Day 4WD Tag-Along

About this experience

Dingos runs the best-reviewed trip on K'gari: 5.0 from more than 1,100 reviews. The day starts at 7 am with a compulsory briefing at Freedom Rainbow Beach hostel, followed by beach-driving training. Around 9:30 the convoy leaves for the Inskip Point barge. Each 4WD carries a small group who swap drivers through the day; the guide's car goes first and talks everyone through soft sand, creek crossings and beach rules over the radio.

The route covers the big names over three days. Day one is an hour at Lake McKenzie with lunch, then Pile Valley and Central Station. Day two runs up the beach to Eli Creek (an hour), the Maheno (30 minutes) and Champagne Pools (an hour). Day three is a 3-hour walk over the Hammerstone Sandblow to Lake Wabby before the drive home. You sleep two nights in permanent twin-share tents in a dingo-fenced beach camp with toilets, $2 hot showers and a camp kitchen with solar charging.

The catch is the fine print. The cancellation window is 6 days, not 24 hours. Damage liability isn't reduced unless you pay AUD 25 to 50 extra, and it's worth paying. The camp has a party side; guests in school holidays mention noise and tents close together. If you're over 35, contact Dingos before booking. Direct, the 3-day tour has been selling at AUD 619 (RRP 659) on the Dingos site.

What guests say

★★★★★

Very fun tour. You get to experience beeing in nature, not just watching it. Our guide, Wade, could answer any question and was friendly, helpful and patient. Felt like a safe tour as a female solo traveller as well.

It was an amazing experience! I really enjoyed being disconnected from the world for a few days because theres no wifi on the island. Driving on the beach is so much fun and our tourguide Waide was the best!

Tips before you book

  • Pay for the damage liability reduction. Hire-style 4WD cover on K'gari commonly excludes rollovers and saltwater damage; read our self-drive vs tour guide.
  • Carry $2 coins for the hot showers.
  • Pack pre-mixed cans if you drink. Spirits and cask wine are banned at camp.
  • Keep food locked away at camp and on the beach. QPWS fines for feeding or leaving food for a dingo start at AUD 2,763 on the spot.
  • There's no phone signal for much of the trip. Download offline maps and tell family you'll be off-grid.
