- Officially renamed K'gari (Butchulla for 'paradise') on 7 June 2023 under the Place Names Act 1994 (Qld); UNESCO renamed the World Heritage property in 2021 (inscribed 1992).
- About 123 km long and roughly 1,660 km2 (166,038 ha): the largest sand island in the world; part of Great Sandy National Park (parks.qld.gov.au).
- Access: barge Inskip Point to Hook Point about 10 minutes, no booking; ferry River Heads to Kingfisher Bay about 45-50 minutes, booking required.
- Drive times: Brisbane to Hervey Bay about 3.5 h; Brisbane to Rainbow Beach about 3 h; Noosa to Rainbow Beach about 1.5 h.
- From 1 July 2026: vehicle access permit AUD 61.80 (up to 1 month) or AUD 311 (up to 1 year); camping AUD 7.75 per person per night or AUD 31 per family.
- High-clearance 4WD required; all beaches and tracks are roads; eastern beach limit 80 km/h; drive about 2 hours either side of low tide.
- Ocean swimming: Queensland Parks says do not swim in the ocean (not patrolled, rips, sharks); no patrolled swimming areas anywhere on K'gari.

- K'gari is not a practical day trip from Brisbane: tours start in Hervey Bay, Rainbow Beach or Noosa (the Noosa day tour lasts 13 hours).
- Trip length is not lake time: a day tour gives about 1 to 1.5 hours at Lake McKenzie and 10 to 20 minutes at the Maheno.
- West-coast 'K'gari' cruises from Hervey Bay do not visit Lake McKenzie, the Maheno or 75 Mile Beach.
- The 4WD land tours do not include whale watching; whale cruises leave Hervey Bay from about July to October.
- The ocean beaches are not for swimming: there are no lifeguards anywhere on the island.
