K'gari (Fraser Island) has a subtropical climate: warm all year, wet in summer, dry and mild in late winter. The weather numbers below come from the Bureau of Meteorology's Hervey Bay Airport station, the nearest long record to the ferries (BOM climate averages).
Weather is only half of it. School holidays fill the barges and campgrounds, whales visit for four months, and park closures shape what you can reach.
The quick answer
August and September are the best months for most visitors: the driest of the year (about 4 rain days a month), 23 to 25 °C, humpback whales in Hervey Bay and wildflowers in the heath. April and May are a good second choice. January to March is hot, wet and stinger season, and the summer holidays (12 Dec 2026 to 26 Jan 2027) are the busiest weeks. The lakes are swimmable all year, cool in July.

What is the best month to visit Fraser Island?
September. It is the driest month at Hervey Bay (4.0 rain days), warm at 25 °C, with whale mothers and calves in the bay and wildflowers on the heath.
August is almost as good and a little cooler. Watch the spring school holidays (19 Sep to 5 Oct 2026, 18 Sep to 4 Oct 2027), when Queensland families fill the island. Our pick for most people: the first two weeks of September, a 4WD day tour plus a whale cruise on a second day.
Humpbacks in Platypus Bay with lunch on board, and a free return trip if you see none.

When is whale season at Fraser Island?
July to October in Hervey Bay, with most sightings from late July to early October. Whale watching is a separate cruise, not part of a 4WD tour.
Queensland's tourism body puts the season at June to November with the most sightings in July to October, and about 7,000 humpbacks stopping in Hervey Bay, the world's first Whale Heritage Site (Queensland.com). Cruise operators run narrower windows: Tasman Venture's whale days run 11 Jul to 25 Oct, and Whalesong's 2025 morning cruises ran 12 Jul to 12 Oct. August is for acrobatics; September and October for mothers and calves.
From 75 Mile Beach you might see blows offshore. You won't get close. For that, book the Whalesong cruise; Whalesong gives you a free return trip if you see no whales.

Five hours in Platypus Bay with lunch or dinner, and a free return trip if no whales show.

August and September, in late winter and early spring, across the coastal heath (wallum).
The heath flowers line the inland tracks and the edges of the dunes. You see them from the coach on any 4WD tour, and on foot on the walks around Lake Wabby and Central Station. It adds a reason to pick that window, which is already the driest of the year.
When are the school holidays, and how busy does K'gari get?
Queensland school holidays fill the barges, campgrounds and tours. The big one is summer: 12 Dec 2026 to 26 Jan 2027.
| Holiday | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Easter | 3 to 19 Apr | 26 Mar to 11 Apr |
| Winter | 27 Jun to 12 Jul | 26 Jun to 11 Jul |
| Spring | 19 Sep to 5 Oct | 18 Sep to 4 Oct |
| Summer | 12 Dec 2026 to 26 Jan 2027 | 11 Dec 2027 to 23 Jan 2028 |
Dates from Queensland Education. Tour prices rise too: K'gari Explorer's high season is 21 Dec 2026 to 10 Jan 2027. Book holiday dates early and use free cancellation. See tour prices and the summer holidays post.
Book the 2-day tour early for the holidays: 2 hours at the lake, a night on the beach.
Check dates for the K'gari 2-day tourAre there stingers at Fraser Island?
Yes, especially in summer. Irukandji and other stingers occur off K'gari and in the Great Sandy Strait, with suspected stings near the west coast mangrove creeks.
QPWS advises vinegar for first aid, no pressure bandage, and a call to 000; medical help on the island is limited (QPWS marine stingers). This matters most on the west coast boat days in the warm months; Whalesong supplies stinger suits on its BBQ cruise. The eastern ocean beach is off limits for swimming all year anyway: no patrols, rips and sharks. The freshwater lakes have no stingers.

What is closed on K'gari in 2026?
The Tukkee Wurroo (Indian Head) walking track to 18 Nov 2026, maintenance on the Lake Wabby walk to 9 Nov, part of the Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk to 26 Jan 2027 and the Northern Forests drive to September 2027.
Other alerts current in October 2026: beach camping zone 9 closed to 29 Jan 2027, works at Central Station and Waddy Point to November, and the K'gari Great Walk season ending 31 Oct for summer. Tours reshuffle around closures; the 2-day tour now cruises past Indian Head rather than climbing it. Check QPWS park alerts before you travel, and our closures post for what it means for itineraries.
When is the worst time to visit Fraser Island?
Late December to January for crowds and prices, and February to March for rain. Neither is a reason to skip it.
Summer still has the warmest lakes, the longest days and the start of the west coast BBQ cruise season. Book ahead, start early, plan for an afternoon storm, and watch kids closely during dingo dispersal season (dingo safety). March is the wettest month at 152 mm over 11 rain days, and tours run in all but the worst weather. Not sure how many days to give it? The day trip guide helps.

Open all year: Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek and the Maheno in a day, with lunch.
