Queensland Parks posts every closure on K'gari (Fraser Island) as a park alert. The list changes weekly, and most of it concerns roads and campsites that tour coaches never use.
Below is what was on the official park alerts page as of 15 October 2026, sorted by what it means for you. Check the page again the week you travel.
The quick answer
Indian Head's walking track stays closed until at least 18 November 2026. The Lake Wabby walk has maintenance until 9 November. The Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk is partly closed until 26 January 2027, the Northern Forests scenic drive until 7 September 2027, and beach camping zone 9 until 29 January 2027. The Great Walk shuts for summer after 31 October. Erosion at the Inskip barge landing means one shared lane. Day tours still run their usual sights.
Which K'gari tracks, roads and camps are closed this summer?
Seven alerts matter for summer 2026-27. Two touch the classic tour route, the rest mainly affect self-drivers and campers.
These come from the Queensland Parks alerts for K'gari and the Inskip Peninsula. Dates are the ones on each alert; rangers can reopen early or extend.

| K'gari Great Walk season ends | after 31 Oct 2026 | Hikers |
Is the Indian Head walk on K'gari open?
No. The Tukkee Wurroo (Indian Head) walking track has been closed since 14 June 2021, with the alert running to 18 November 2026.
The closure is for severe erosion on the headland track. Queensland Parks lists it as park alert 20716, and it has been rolled forward before. Treat 18 November as the next review date, not a promise.
Tours already work around it. The K'gari Explorer 2-day itinerary lists Indian Head as a "cruise past" on day two, before an hour at Champagne Pools. You see the headland from the beach and skip the climb. If a reseller page still promises a lookout walk at Indian Head, it is out of date.

Lake Wabby, two hours at Lake McKenzie and Champagne Pools, with a night at K'gari Beach Resort.
Explore the K'gari 2-day tour Tour detailsCan you visit Lake Wabby during the track maintenance?
The maintenance window runs from 10 August to 9 November 2026. After that the 4.1 km walk from the beach is back to normal.
Lake Wabby is K'gari's deepest lake, an 11 m green barrage lake being swallowed by the Hammerstone Sandblow. The main Lake Wabby walk is 4.1 km one way, about two hours, and that is the track under planned maintenance. The lookout walk is a separate 900 m return.
Day tours do not go to Lake Wabby anyway. It is a 2-day stop: K'gari Explorer gives it two hours on day one, via the sandblow. For anyone travelling from mid November on, this alert no longer applies. One rule does not change: no running or rolling down the dune. Spinal injuries happen here.

Is the Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk at Central Station closed?
Partly, from 25 May 2026 to 26 January 2027. Central Station stays open and tours still stop there.
The Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk runs beside the clear creek through rainforest at Central Station. Wanggoolba Creek is sacred to the Butchulla people, and the boardwalk is the only way to walk it. Part of it is closed for works through the whole summer holidays.
Expect a shorter loop. Most day tours give Central Station 30 to 35 minutes, which was never enough for more than the short boardwalk anyway. Your guide picks the open section. The Pile Valley circuit, 4 km through K'gari satinay and brush box, starts from the same area.
Which closures affect self-drivers and campers?
The Northern Forests scenic drive, two partial road closures, beach camping zone 9 and the Great Walk. Tour coaches avoid all of these.
The Northern Forests scenic drive is closed from 7 September 2026 to 7 September 2027 between Bullock Link Road and Woralie Road, with a detour via those two roads. Northern Road is partly closed at Urang Creek until 29 December, and Moon Point Road on the west side until 30 January 2027. Inland tracks are 30 km/h roads; add time.
Beach camping zone 9 (Diray and Carree) is closed until 29 January 2027 after erosion and fallen trees from big tides and swell. Permits there are suspended; zone 8 is the suggested alternative. The K'gari Great Walk runs from 1 March to 31 October, because fire danger is too high in summer, so multi-day hikers are out of luck until March. Fees for all of this are in our 2026-27 permit fees post.
What is happening at the Inskip Point barge landing?
Severe erosion has merged the entry and exit tracks into one narrow lane. Cross two hours either side of low tide and expect delays.
The Inskip erosion alert runs from 25 March 2026 to 30 January 2027. Vehicles going both ways now share one track to the barge, and it is tightest at high tide, when there is almost no beach left. Queensland Parks asks drivers to plan for two hours either side of low tide and to check the barge operator's advice before leaving.
Tours from Rainbow Beach cross here every day and time it for you. Discovery's Rainbow Beach day tour meets at 7:30 am and builds the barge into the plan. Self-drivers coming over during the summer holidays should expect a queue at peak times.

Small group from Rainbow Beach, barge timed by the guide, 90 minutes at Lake McKenzie.
