Booking choice: The K'gari all-inclusive day tour, from $198 per person. Check dates Tour details
If you drive yourself onto K'gari (Fraser Island), you pay three separate bills before the first wheel touches sand: a vehicle access permit, a camping permit for every night you sleep on the island, and the barge or ferry. All three moved in 2026, and Queensland Parks raised its fees on 1 July as it does every year.
This post lists the 2026-27 numbers from the official pages as of 15 October 2026, in Australian dollars, then compares them with what a guided tour already bundles in.
The quick answer
From 1 July 2026 a K'gari vehicle access permit costs AUD 61.80 for up to a month or AUD 311 for up to a year. Camping is AUD 7.75 per person per night or AUD 31 per family. The Inskip Point barge is about AUD 140 to 150 return for a 4WD; the River Heads vehicle ferry starts at AUD 270.60 return. Feeding a dingo now costs AUD 2,763 on the spot. Guided day tours include park fees and the crossing.
How much is the K'gari vehicle access permit in 2026-27?
AUD 61.80 for one month or less, AUD 311 for anything longer up to a year. A combined K'gari and Cooloola permit is cheaper if you drive both.
Every vehicle driving in the K'gari (Fraser Island) Recreation Area needs a vehicle access permit (VAP), bought before you arrive. Queensland Parks lists the fees on its vehicle access permits page: AUD 61.80 for a month or less and AUD 311.00 for more than a month. A year earlier the same permits were AUD 57.80 and AUD 291, a rise of about 7%.
Book online, at a Queensland Parks counter or on 13 QGOV (13 74 68), and carry the permit on your phone or printed. Do not count on slipping through without one. The Queensland Government told Parliament in February 2026 that automatic number plate recognition cameras have checked vehicles entering the Recreation Area around the clock since 2022.
The permit is per vehicle, not per person. Four friends in one hire 4WD pay it once.
| Permit (from 1 July 2026) | 1 month or less | Over 1 month, up to 1 year |
|---|---|---|
| K'gari Recreation Area | AUD 61.80 | AUD 311.00 |
| K'gari plus Cooloola (combined, 20% off) | AUD 99.25 | AUD 498.10 |
| K'gari, 2025-26 rate for comparison | AUD 57.80 | AUD 291.00 |
How much does it cost to camp on K'gari?
AUD 7.75 per person per night, or AUD 31 per family per night. Children under 5 camp free.
The camping fee is the standard Queensland rate, set on the camping bookings and fees page from 1 July 2026. A family here means one or two adults with their children under 18, up to eight people in all. Book before you go: every campground and beach camping zone on the island needs a permit. The K'gari permit conditions set the rules.
Two adults camping three nights pay AUD 46.50. A family of five pays AUD 93 for the same three nights. Cheap, next to the barge. The real cost is choosing well: with children under 14, Queensland Parks strongly recommends a campground with a dingo deterrent fence, such as Central Station, Dundubara or Waddy Point top. Beach camping zone 9 (Diray and Carree) is closed until 29 January 2027, so permits there are suspended. Our summer closures post lists the rest.

How much is the barge or ferry to K'gari?
From Inskip Point near Rainbow Beach, about AUD 140 to 150 return for a 4WD with passengers. From River Heads near Hervey Bay, from AUD 270.60 return for a vehicle, or AUD 65 one way on foot.
There are two crossings. The short one is the Manta Ray barge from Inskip Point to Hook Point: about 10 minutes, roughly every 30 minutes from 6:00 am, no booking. Tickets are not sold online; you pay by phone (07 5486 3935) or on board. Published 4WD return fares sit at AUD 140 on one guide and AUD 150 on the operator's ticket page, so budget AUD 150 and be pleased if it is less.
The long one is Island Connections from River Heads to Kingfisher Bay, about 45 minutes each way and bookable ahead. Its fare page shows no effective date, so check at checkout. Mind the tide at Inskip too: severe erosion has squeezed the barge landing tracks into a single shared lane, and Queensland Parks asks drivers to cross two hours either side of low tide.
| Crossing | Who | Fare (AUD) |
|---|---|---|
| Inskip Point to Hook Point (Manta Ray barge) | 4WD and passengers, return | about 140 to 150 |
| River Heads to Kingfisher Bay | Standard 4WD up to 5.3 m, one way | from 135.30, plus 7 per extra passenger |
| River Heads to Kingfisher Bay | Standard 4WD, return | from 270.60 |
| River Heads to Kingfisher Bay | Walk-on adult, one way | from 65 |
| River Heads to Kingfisher Bay | Walk-on child 4 to 14, one way | from 35 |
What are the dingo fines on K'gari in 2026?
AUD 2,763 on the spot for feeding or disturbing a wongari (dingo), up to AUD 28,495 in court. Leaving food where dingoes can get it costs AUD 518 on the spot.
Queensland fines are set in penalty units, and the unit rose to AUD 172.70 on 1 July 2026 under the 2026 amendment regulation. The K'gari dingo fines rose with it. The Be dingo-safe page lists the current figures.
Rangers do write these tickets. In November 2024 a visitor was fined on the spot for throwing a small fish to a juvenile dingo at Waddy Point. The rules got fresh attention after a 19-year-old Canadian woman, Piper James, died on the eastern beach in January 2026; the coroner found she drowned after injuries from a dingo attack. Our dingo safety guide covers what to do on the sand.
| Offence | On-the-spot fine | Maximum in court |
|---|---|---|
| Feeding or disturbing a wongari | AUD 2,763 | AUD 28,495 |
| Not storing food securely, or making food available | AUD 518 | AUD 6,908 |
What does a K'gari tour already include?
On the 4WD tours on this site: the crossing, national park fees and fuel. On the tag-along, the vehicle and camping permits too. The boat trips need no permit at all.
This is the part people forget to compare. The K'gari Explorer day tour lists national park fees and fuel levies, the return passenger ferry and lunch. Discovery's day tour from Rainbow Beach includes the barge, park fees and permits. The Dingos 3-day tag-along covers national park and vehicle permits, camping permits for two nights, fuel and the return ferry.
Boat days are simpler. Remote K'gari and the west coast BBQ cruise land you on the island from the water, so there is no vehicle and nothing to permit.
| Trip | Crossing | Park fees / permits | Camping |
|---|---|---|---|
| K'gari Explorer day tour | Included | Included | Not needed |
| Discovery day tour, Rainbow Beach | Included | Included | Not needed |
| Dingos 3-day tag-along | Included | Vehicle permit included | 2 nights included |
| Remote K'gari boat day | By boat | No vehicle | Not needed |

Ferry, park fees and lunch paid, an hour at Lake McKenzie, then Eli Creek and the Maheno. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
Explore the K'gari all-inclusive day tour Tour detailsIs it cheaper to self-drive K'gari or take a tour?
For a group of four with its own 4WD, self-drive fees are low. For a couple without one, a tour is usually cheaper once you add hire.
The fees alone look modest. A couple with their own 4WD, crossing at Inskip and camping three nights, pays about AUD 258: the permit at AUD 61.80, the barge at about AUD 150 and AUD 46.50 of camping. Split across four people in one vehicle, the fees barely register.
Hire changes everything. A 4WD hire starts around AUD 365 a day, before fuel, the barge and the permit, and hire waivers commonly exclude rollovers and saltwater damage. Two people on the K'gari Explorer day tour pay from AUD 279 each direct, or from $198 each in USD on Viator, with nothing else to buy but drinks. Our self-drive or tour guide runs the full numbers, and the price guide compares every tour.
