Lake McKenzie, Boorangoora to the Butchulla people, is a perched lake: rainwater held up by a layer of organic matter and compacted sand, about 100 m above sea level. It covers about 130 hectares and averages 6.6 m deep (USC K'gari app). The sand works as a filter, which is why the water is so clear.
Every 4WD tour on K'gari (Fraser Island) stops here. How long you stay, and how many other people are in the water with you, depends on the tour you pick.
The quick answer
Lake McKenzie is in the middle of K'gari, reached by 4WD only. You can swim; nobody patrols it. Day tours give 1 to 1.5 hours, and the 2-day tour gives 2 hours. The busiest time is 10:30 am to 3 pm, which is when day tours arrive. QPWS asks swimmers to cover up rather than use lots of sunscreen, and no food or drink except water is allowed on the shore.

How do you get to Lake McKenzie?
By 4WD tour, or in your own high-clearance 4WD with a permit. There are no buses or roads for normal cars on K'gari.
The lake sits inland, between Kingfisher Bay on the west coast and Eurong on the eastern beach, on sand tracks with a 30 km/h limit. From the Inskip barge you drive up the beach and cut inland; from the River Heads ferry you cross the middle of the island. Three fenced picnic areas sit back from the water, with short walks down to the shore (QPWS Boorangoora day-use area). There are non-flush toilets, picnic tables and a lookout.
Every 4WD tour on this site includes it: K'gari Explorer's day tour, Discovery from Rainbow Beach and the Fraser Experience small group for a day, plus all the 2- and 3-day trips. The boat days don't.
One booking for the lake: 4WD, ferry, park fees and an hour in the water, with lunch.
Check dates for the K'gari all-inclusive day tourCan you swim in Lake McKenzie?
Yes, and almost everyone does. The lake is not patrolled, the floor drops away suddenly, and QPWS says never to dive or jump in.
The rules are short (QPWS staying safe):
- No diving or jumping. Lake floors on K'gari, "especially Boorangoora", have deep drop-offs, and there can be submerged logs.
- No lifeguards. There are no patrolled swimming areas anywhere on the island. Watch kids in the water every minute.
- Water only. Food and drinks other than water are banned on the lakeshore because they draw dingoes. Eat in the fenced picnic area.
- Leave nothing. A ranger clean-up pulled 184 band-aids and 22 hair ties off the lakebed in one day (DES media release). Tie your hair with something you'll keep track of.

Why does QPWS ask you to go easy on sunscreen?
Because sunscreen washes off into a lake with almost no nutrients and little flushing. QPWS asks swimmers to wear protective clothing so they need less of it.
The official request reads: "wear protective clothing when swimming to reduce the amount of sunscreen you need to use" (QPWS). A rash vest and a hat do most of the work. K'gari Explorer tells guests to bring zinc. Put it on your face and shoulders before the ferry, not on the sand.
Don't skip sun protection: the sand is pure white silica and bounces the light back at you. Cover up, then swim.
When is Lake McKenzie busiest?
Between 10:30 am and 3 pm, says QPWS. That is when the day tours arrive, so on a day tour you will share it.
Guests notice it. One K'gari Explorer guest wrote that the day "felt rushed would have liked to of spent more time at places [...] Only 25 minutes at McKenzie lake". The listing says an hour; a late tide can cut stops short. Crowds peak in the school holidays, above all from mid December to late January.
Three ways round it:
- A multi-day tour that times the lake around the day-trippers. The 2-day tour gives 2 hours.
- A small group: Discovery's day tour has 20 people at most and spends 1.5 hours here, with lunch.
- Your own 4WD, arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon. See self-drive or tour.

Twenty people at most and 90 minutes at Lake McKenzie, lunch included, via the short Inskip barge.

Check dates for the K'gari 2-day tourIs Lake Wabby or Lake McKenzie better?
For swimming, Lake McKenzie. For scenery and a walk, Lake Wabby: a deep green lake being slowly swallowed by the Hammerstone Sandblow.
Lake Wabby is the deepest lake on K'gari, about 11 m, and a different kind of lake: a barrage lake, dammed by sand, with a huge dune spilling into its eastern side. It takes effort. The walk from the eastern beach is 4.1 km one way, about 2 hours, and there is a 900 m lookout walk (QPWS Lake Wabby walk). QPWS warns against running or rolling down the dune: people have suffered lifelong spinal injuries there.
Planned maintenance on the Lake Wabby walk runs to 9 Nov 2026; check park alerts and our closures post before you go. Day tours don't go there; the 2- and 3-day tours do.

Are there quieter lakes than Lake McKenzie?
Yes. Lake Birrabeen, on the southern lakes drive, has the same white sand and clear water with far fewer people. Lake Boomanjin is bigger and tea-coloured.
Lake Birrabeen is the alternative most locals name. Discovery K'gari's 2-day camping tour spends 2 hours there and markets it as "a beautiful alternative to Lake McKenzie with fewer crowds". Lake Boomanjin, further south, has tannin-stained water from the tea trees around it. Basin Lake sits on a short walk from Central Station.
None of these is on a standard day tour. You get them on a multi-day trip or with your own 4WD.

What should you bring to Lake McKenzie?
Swimwear on under your clothes, a rash vest or long-sleeve top, a hat, zinc, a towel, water in a bottle and a bag for your rubbish.
Leave snacks on the coach or in the fenced picnic area: dingoes patrol the shore, and food on the beach brings a fine. Keep phones in a dry bag, since the fine sand gets into everything. Bring a dingo safety stick if you walk away from the group; the dingo guide explains why. The water is cool from June to August and warm in summer; the best time to visit has the monthly numbers.
A small group from Hervey Bay, an hour at the lake and an hour on 75 Mile Beach.

Can you swim in Lake McKenzie?
Yes. It is unpatrolled, the floor drops off suddenly, and diving or jumping in is not allowed. Keep children within reach.
Can you drive to Lake McKenzie in a normal car?
No. K'gari has sand tracks only, and QPWS requires a high-clearance 4WD with low range. Take a tour or hire a 4WD.
Can you eat at Lake McKenzie?
Only in the fenced picnic areas. Food and drinks other than water are banned on the lakeshore because they attract dingoes.
Is sunscreen allowed in Lake McKenzie?
It isn't banned, but QPWS asks swimmers to wear protective clothing so they need less sunscreen, to protect the lake.
