K'gari Explorer Tours · Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach

K'gari in one day, by 4WD coach

K'gari Explorer's big 4WD coaches take you across to K'gari (Fraser Island) for Lake McKenzie, the rainforest at Central Station, 75 Mile Beach, the Maheno wreck and Eli Creek, with ferry, park fees and lunch paid. Pick it when you have one day, want the classic sights and would rather not think about tides, permits or barges.

K'gari All-Inclusive Day Tour

About this experience

This is the trip most people mean when they say they "did Fraser". K'gari Explorer is part of the SeaLink group that also runs the River Heads ferries, and its day tour has close to 4,000 reviews on Viator. From Hervey Bay you ride to River Heads and take the passenger ferry across the Great Sandy Strait; from Rainbow Beach the coach crosses on the short Inskip Point barge. On the island a guide drives a high-clearance 4WD coach built for the sand tracks, and talks most of the way.

The listing lists 1 hour at Lake McKenzie, 20 minutes at the Maheno, 35 minutes on the Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk at Central Station and 30 minutes at Eli Creek, plus a run along 75 Mile Beach. Lunch is a buffet at K'gari Beach Resort at Eurong, guests report. The order changes with the tide, because the beach can only be driven around low water. Everything that usually trips up a self-drive day is covered: ferry, national park fees, fuel levies and the 4WD itself.

Two things to know before you book. A day tour is mostly driving: the coach covers well over 100 km of soft sand and bumpy inland track, and several reviewers call the ride rough. And an hour at Lake McKenzie lands in its busiest window, which QPWS puts at 10:30 am to 3 pm. If that sounds rushed, the 2-day version doubles the lake time and adds Lake Wabby and Champagne Pools. Booking direct, the operator lists it from AUD 279 for an adult.

  • Ferry or barge, national park fees, fuel levies and lunch all included
  • An hour to swim at Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora)
  • The Maheno wreck and a float down Eli Creek
  • Rainforest boardwalk along Wanggoolba Creek at Central Station
  • Optional scenic flight from the beach with Air Fraser (paid on the day)

How the day runs

  5. 20 to 30 min eachMaheno and Eli Creek

What guests say

★★★★★

You get to see everything that's mentioned on the tour! Was such a great day. So interesting hearing about trees and how life is on the island. We also managed to spot some dingos & dolphins!

Taylor/ Taylah was our guide and she was so warm, lovely and welcoming. [...] Fair bit of time spent in the bus itself, but it was to be expected so didn't bother us. Highly recommend the experience!

It is a big busy day getting to see the main sites of K'gari, Maheno, Eli Creek, delicious lunch at Eurong, Central Station & Lake Mackenzie. Option of doing the scenic flight, taking off & landing on the beach is a great addition if you choose to do it.

Well organised day. Comfortable bus considering the rough sandy roads of the island. Lovely morning tea and lunch. Our tour guide Butch was very informative a great driver and kept us up to date with the days events.

Tips before you book

  • Book the right departure. Staying in Hervey Bay, pick Buccaneer Drive; staying in Rainbow Beach, pick Rainbow Beach Road. Guests have turned up at the wrong one.
  • Sit near the front of the coach. Guests say the bumps are far worse at the back.
  • Bring a cheap inflatable ring for Eli Creek. The creek is shallow and the tour doesn't supply floats.
  • Use zinc sunscreen or a rash shirt at the lake. QPWS asks swimmers to cut down on sunscreen to protect the water.
  • Book about a month ahead in school holidays. The average Viator booking is made 28 days out.

Frequently asked questions

How long do you get at Lake McKenzie on the K'gari Explorer day tour?

The listing gives 1 hour. Most guests find that enough for a swim and a sit on the sand, but a few on busy days say the stop felt shorter. The 2-day tour gives 2 hours.

Is the K'gari Explorer day tour suitable for children?

Yes, from age 1. Seatbelts are compulsory and limited child seats cost extra, so bring your own front-facing seat for small children. The listing advises against the trip for anyone with back problems.

Does the day tour leave from Brisbane?

No. It leaves from Hervey Bay (about 3.5 hours north of Brisbane) or Rainbow Beach (about 3 hours). Stay a night first; our day trip guide explains why.

Can you swim in the ocean on the tour?

No. QPWS says not to swim in the ocean: it isn't patrolled and there may be rips and sharks. You swim at Lake McKenzie and wade in Eli Creek instead.
