Do K'gari tour prices go up over Christmas?
Yes. K'gari Explorer charges its top rate from 21 December to 10 January, and Discovery's high season runs all summer.
Booked direct, K'gari Explorer's day tour has three price tiers for adults: AUD 279, AUD 299 and AUD 319, with the top one applying from 21 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. Discovery K'gari's day tour from Rainbow Beach is AUD 299 in its high season, which runs from 19 September 2026 to 31 March 2027, against a from-price of AUD 279 on its own site. Children 5 to 17 pay from AUD 249.
On Viator the from-prices are USD 198 for the K'gari Explorer day tour and USD 213 for Discovery's Rainbow Beach tour. The price on your actual date is what you pay, so check the holiday week before you plan around a number. The free 24-hour cancellation makes early booking low-risk.

Explore the K'gari all-inclusive day tour Tour detailsIs K'gari safe for kids during dingo dispersal season?
It is safe with strict rules. December to February is dispersal season, when young dingoes test boundaries, including with children.
Queensland Parks describes summer as the time juvenile wongari learn pack rules: growling, testing dominance, and sometimes turning that on people. What looks playful can be serious. The Be dingo-safe rules are plain: keep children within arm's reach at all times, small teenagers too. Walk in groups, carry a stick, never run, never feed.
On a tour, the guide watches the group and the food. Campers with children under 14 should use a fenced campground. Age limits matter too. Discovery takes children from 5, K'gari Explorer from 1, and the Dingos tag-along only ages 18 to 35. Our dingo safety guide has the full list.

How hot and wet is K'gari in December and January?
Around 30 °C by day and 21 to 22 °C at night, with about 120 to 140 mm of rain a month in storms. Hot, humid, and the lakes are at their warmest.
The nearest long record is the Bureau of Meteorology station at Hervey Bay Airport. Rainbow Beach, on the ocean side, is wetter. Rain mostly arrives as afternoon storms, so a tour day is rarely a write-off, but the sand tracks get rough after a downpour.
Lake McKenzie is busiest from 10:30 am to 3 pm, which is exactly when day tours arrive. Wear a rash vest or shirt in the water: Queensland Parks asks swimmers to cover up and use less sunscreen to protect the lake. Bring zinc, a hat and at least a litre of water each. Are there stingers at K'gari in summer, and where can you swim?
Yes. Irukandji and other stingers are present in summer, with stings reported on the west coast. Swim in the lakes and creeks, never in the ocean.
Queensland Parks says marine stingers are present "especially during the summer months" in the waters off K'gari, Hervey Bay and the Great Sandy Strait, with suspected Irukandji stings on the western side around mangrove creeks (QPWS stinger factsheet). First aid is vinegar, no pressure bandage, and a call to 000. Medical help on the island is limited.
The eastern beach is off limits for swimming all year: no lifeguards, rips and sharks. That leaves Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby and Eli Creek, which are fresh water and stinger-free. On the boat trips, wear the suit. Whalesong supplies stinger suits free on its west coast cruise.

What runs on K'gari's west coast in summer?
The whale season is over, and Whalesong's half-day BBQ cruise takes its place from November to May. Remote K'gari runs all year.
Humpbacks leave Hervey Bay by late October; Tasman Venture's whale product stops on 25 October. From November, the west coast BBQ cruise runs daily, 9 am to 2 pm, with kayaks, snorkelling gear and a BBQ lunch on a quiet beach. It is the easy option with young children: five hours, no 4WD, no early start.
Remote K'gari is the full day, from the marina at Urangan, with creeks, kayaks and a bushwalk. Neither boat visits Lake McKenzie, the Maheno or 75 Mile Beach. Want both? Do the 4WD day tour one day and the cruise the next.
